How to do V-Sit?
The V-Sit is an advanced static calisthenics and gymnastics skill in which you support your entire body on straight arms while lifting both straight legs above horizontal. The torso and elevated legs create the recognizable V-shaped position.
The V-Sit is the natural continuation of the Full L-Sit. Instead of holding the legs approximately horizontal, you use greater active compression to pull them upward toward your torso while maintaining straight elbows, active shoulders and complete clearance underneath the hips and feet.
This page covers the hand-supported V-Sit performed on parallettes, parallel bars or the floor. It should not be confused with a V-up, boat pose or abdominal V-sit exercise in which the hips remain on the ground.
A strong L-Sit is the primary prerequisite, but direct compression work is equally important. Seated Single-Leg Pike Lifts and Seated Double-Leg Pike Lifts develop the hip-flexor strength and active range needed to raise the legs above the L-Sit position.

The progression from L-Sit to V-Sit
The V-Sit should be built on top of an established L-Sit rather than treated as an unrelated core exercise. The following sequence gradually increases the support, lever and compression demands:
- Parallel Bar Support Hold: Develop straight-arm support and the ability to keep the shoulders active.
- L-Sit Hip Lift With Sliders: Practise lifting the hips while the heels remain supported.
- Tuck L-Sit: Support the entire body with both knees bent and both feet off the floor.
- Single-Leg L-Sit: Extend one leg while keeping the opposite knee tucked.
- Full L-Sit: Hold both straight legs approximately horizontal.
- High Tuck V-Sit: Lean back slightly and pull both bent knees high toward the chest.
- One-Leg V-Sit: Extend one leg above horizontal while keeping the opposite knee tucked.
- V-Sit: Extend both legs above horizontal and hold the complete V-shaped position.
The seated pike lifts form a complementary compression branch. They do not replace supported L-Sit practice, but they help develop the strength required to raise the legs from horizontal toward the V-Sit.

What makes a V-Sit harder than an L-Sit?
During an L-Sit, the legs are held approximately horizontal. During a V-Sit, the legs must rise above horizontal and move closer to the torso while the hips remain suspended.
This requires greater active compression from the hip flexors, more usable hamstring flexibility and additional upper-body strength to balance the changing position of the legs. The torso normally leans farther backward and the hips may move slightly forward relative to the hands.
Readiness and prerequisites
You should be able to perform a controlled Full L-Sit with straight elbows, active shoulders, straight knees and a deliberate exit before attempting the full V-Sit. A practical readiness benchmark is approximately 8–10 seconds of clean L-Sit control, although no single hold time is mandatory for every athlete.
You should also be able to:
- Perform Seated Double-Leg Pike Lifts without leaning backward.
- Hold a High Tuck V-Sit with your knees above the usual Tuck L-Sit position.
- Extend one leg above horizontal in a One-Leg V-Sit.
- Support your body on straight arms without wrist, elbow or shoulder pain.
- Lower safely from a failed attempt without dropping onto the equipment.
Warm-up
Prepare the wrists, elbows, shoulders, hips and hamstrings before high-effort attempts. A suitable preparation sequence is:
- Complete a short Wrist Warm-Up Routine.
- Perform two or three short straight-arm support holds.
- Complete controlled Seated Single-Leg and Double-Leg Pike Lifts.
- Perform several short Tuck L-Sit and Full L-Sit holds.
- Practise one or two submaximal High Tuck or One-Leg V-Sit attempts.
Avoid forcing a deep passive pike stretch immediately before maximal holds if it leaves the hamstrings uncomfortable or reduces your ability to produce tension.
Equipment and setup
Parallettes are the recommended starting equipment because they provide clearance underneath the hips and legs while keeping the wrists in a neutral position. Parallel bars also work well and provide additional space if your feet drop during the entry or exit.
The floor version requires greater clearance, wrist tolerance and compression. Treat it as a harder equipment variation rather than the default starting version.
Starting position on parallettes
- Place the parallettes parallel and approximately shoulder-width apart.
- Check that both parallettes are stable and cannot slide or tip.
- Sit or stand between the handles with your legs together.
- Grip the center of each handle and wrap your thumbs around it.
- Straighten your elbows to their natural end range without forcing them backward.
- Press the handles down and create space between your shoulders and ears.
- Enter a controlled Full L-Sit or High Tuck V-Sit before attempting the final position.
How to perform the V-Sit
- Establish your support. Press firmly through both hands, keep your elbows straight and maintain active shoulders.
- Begin from an L-Sit. Hold both legs straight, together and approximately horizontal in front of you.
- Shift into balance. Allow your torso and shoulders to lean slightly backward while your hips move slightly forward between your hands.
- Increase the compression. Pull your thighs toward your torso and raise both legs above the horizontal L-Sit position.
- Maintain straight legs. Contract your quadriceps, squeeze the legs together and point your toes.
- Keep pressing downward. Prevent the shoulders from rising toward your ears as the legs move higher.
- Hold the V shape. Maintain the highest position you can control without bending your elbows or knees.
- Breathe carefully. Use short, controlled breaths without allowing the legs or hips to drop.
- Exit under control. Lower the legs back toward an L-Sit or tuck before placing your feet and hips down safely.
What counts as a proper V-Sit?
A valid V-Sit should meet the following standards:
- Your entire body is supported by your hands.
- Your hips and feet remain completely off the floor.
- Your elbows remain straight.
- Your shoulders remain active rather than shrugged.
- Both knees remain locked.
- Your legs remain together unless performing a deliberate straddle variation.
- Your toes remain pointed.
- Both feet are held clearly above the horizontal L-Sit position.
- Your thighs do not rest on your arms.
- The position is entered, held and exited without kicking or uncontrolled swinging.
The legs do not need to be vertical for the exercise to qualify as a V-Sit. A lower V-Sit begins when the straight legs are held clearly above horizontal, while increasingly vertical positions represent more advanced versions of the skill.
How should the shoulders and torso be positioned?
Continue pushing down through the hands and keep the shoulders away from your ears. A small amount of shoulder-blade protraction is normal, but the upper body should remain controlled rather than collapsing between the arms.
The torso usually leans backward as the legs rise. This is part of balancing the V-Sit and should not be confused with losing abdominal tension. The hips may travel slightly forward, but the goal remains raising the legs rather than driving the hips upward into a Manna.

Sets, hold times and rest
Train the V-Sit as a skill while you are relatively fresh. It generally fits after your warm-up and before high-fatigue abdominal or pushing exercises.
- Sets: 3–5
- Hold time: 3–8 seconds with clean technique
- Rest: 90–180 seconds between demanding attempts
- Frequency: 2–3 sessions per week when the wrists, elbows and shoulders recover comfortably
If you cannot establish the position for approximately two controlled seconds, use a High Tuck V-Sit, One-Leg V-Sit or lower leg angle. Finish each set before your elbows bend, shoulders shrug or knees soften.
You can also accumulate several short holds instead of forcing one maximal attempt. For example, four controlled five-second holds are usually more useful for skill practice than one long attempt that loses its shape.
When are you ready to raise the legs higher?
Increase the V-Sit angle when you can enter your current position without kicking, maintain straight elbows and knees, breathe during the hold and return to an L-Sit or tuck under control.
Raise the legs gradually rather than trying to jump immediately from horizontal to vertical. Improving the angle while losing elbow extension or hip clearance is not a successful progression.
Safety and discomfort
High muscular effort in the hip flexors, abdominals, triceps, shoulders and quadriceps is expected. The hamstrings may also feel strongly stretched as the legs move closer to the torso.
Stop if you experience sharp wrist, elbow, shoulder, hip or lower-back pain, or if you notice numbness or tingling. Return to a lower progression and consider professional assessment if symptoms persist.
Use parallettes if floor wrist extension is uncomfortable. Do not force the elbows beyond their natural lockout, and keep the area beneath and behind you clear in case you lose balance.

What is the difference between an L-Sit and a V-Sit?

Do my legs need to be vertical?

Yes, but the freely moving rings add a substantial stability challenge and should be attempted only after developing a strong ring support and a controlled V-Sit on stable equipment.
What is the difference between a V-Sit and an I-Sit?
A V-Sit holds the legs above horizontal at a visible angle to the torso, while an I-Sit raises them much closer to vertical and requires greater compression.
Is the Manna simply a higher V-Sit?
No. In a V-Sit, the main objective is to raise the legs higher. The Manna requires a different hip path and shoulder-blade position, with much greater emphasis on moving the hips forward and upward.
Can I train the V-Sit without a Full L-Sit?
You can practise High Tuck and One-Leg V-Sit progressions, but a controlled Full L-Sit provides the most reliable base for the complete straight-leg V-Sit.
How often should I practise the V-Sit?
Two or three focused sessions per week are appropriate for many trainees, provided the wrists, elbows, shoulders and hip flexors recover comfortably between sessions.
